Sudan plunges into crisis after military dissolves government

Sudan plunged into crisis after the military dissolved the government, divided the country's power and declared a state of emergency on Monday.

The move shattered hopes for a peaceful transfer of power after the ouster of former President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.

Sudan has been ruled by an unhappy alliance between the military and civilians since 2019, but on Monday the military took control. Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and his wife were detained. Several ministers and government officials were also arrested as General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan's armed forces, dissolved the Sovereignty Council and the government, saying in a televised statement that "the government "Independent and fair representatives" will remain in power until an election in 2023.
